Before it kills you.
I don't mean it in a literal way, but working a job that you wake up and hate, will slowly kill you by draining all the light out of your life. I won't bore you and go into detail about my job but I am currently coming up to my 3rd year of working in the warehouse industry. The person I am now is a completely different person to the 18 year old lad entering that first warehouse shift in 2021.
While i have learnt valuable skills and met some fantastic people, I wish I would have been able to look into a different career far sooner.
In this article I will give you an insight into how you can start to shift your mindset and stop letting your job destroy your life.
Leave the comfort of the pay-check behind, your dreams are worth the risk.
The rule of Insanity:
"Doing the exact same thing every day and expecting things to change"
I know situations are different for many people and like I know it may seem crazy taking advice from a 21 year old. But I have held many conversations with people in my 3 years of work from all different ages and situations.
My only advice is that, what is actually holding you down from changing your life?
The financial state.
Probably the main reason to why most people are held hostage in their jobs. I will assure you that it is a VERY reasonable excuse. By no means quit your job if it makes your situation worse. But there is nothing stopping you from exploring other options.
Many people have heavy expenses going out of their banks each month, things such as family, A balanced social life, rent and all sorts of other monthly outgoings all amount to take a big slice of your pay-check every month. So if this is the case, work on your finances and start to put aside some money for a "safety net". This will foresee anything that may go wrong when you look at a career change. Keep in mind, changing your career may take a few months, so you may need to stick it out for a little while until you can quit comfortably and in a safe position to do so.
PLEASE IGNORE THE TIK-TOKS AND SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS TRYING TO SELL YOU COURSES AND PROMISING YOU 10k A MONTH.
If you want to learn a high income skill and work for yourself, Use authentic ways such as Youtube, Reading books and engage in conversations with people in these fields. Most people on social media are trying to sell you something, to them you are a client. Now I do not have anything against these people and this is a legal way to make money, however I also see it as preying on the weak. Mostly all the information you need for whatever path you go down, you can find for free online. You just have to be willing to put in the hours to study and be patient.
Find your purpose!
If you’re feeling lost or uncertain about your purpose, it’s okay. Purpose isn’t always something that comes to you overnight. It requires exploration, patience, and self-reflection. But finding your purpose can excel any career path you want to pursue.
Here is why:
It gives you direction.
You will naturally start aiming towards something as all your focus will direct towards how you can succeed in the field you find purposeful.
It becomes 10 times easier to get out of bed in the morning.
You will rise in the morning excited to chase your purpose and build on whatever it is, you are chasing.
You become a better person.
You regain the spark you may have lost. You become a better friend, lover, father, brother and just a more genuine person as you feel far more upbeat.
Allows you to stop stressing and worrying.
Most men constantly are at war with themselves about not being where they want to be in life. My question is why? Why stress about something when you dictate every decision in your life. Your stress is not needed.
You connect with the right people.
You will gradually lean towards people who will help you progress further in your life. These people you need to keep around because you will benefit greatly off them.
Life just becomes 100 times better.
Everything is far more clear and organised. You have more time to focus on the other things that matter in life such as family and friends.
The master has failed more times than the beginner has even attempted.
Purposely fail, Don't be scared of it. When it comes to your career, Failing is such a vital factor of success.
You will never be given anything without a cost, So earn it. Go out and fail over and over again. Don't keep yourself locked away from the world, stuck in a job you hate, working for someone else. You potential is truly unmatched and if you dig deep and find that drive, anything is possible.
You are already disciplined.
Every morning you wake up at a specific time to get up and be ready for a day of work. After getting up, you make your way to work, at the same time 5/6 days a week. This is because in your mind, you think you are forced to. Being late or not turning up will result in you losing your job, so you bring yourself to find discipline to make it to work. This is proof that when their is a cost to having to wake up, you wake up.
The trick is to get to a point in your life, where you have to force yourself to sleep at night because you want to make the most of your day. You need to be excited to wake up and be excited to voyage into new opportunities and experiences, every single day.
The big question of HOW?
How can i afford to quit my job?
Realistically you will not be able to straight away. The first part of it is to sit down with a pen and a piece of paper and write down your dreams, goals and anything you want to achieve in life. No matter how big or small, write it all down. Once you have figured out what you want, Start building a plan. This plan will be how you set yourself up to be in a position to be able to 'escape' the reality you are currently living through. Here are some things your plan could include:
Budgeting - You will NEED to budget carefully as you may be in a difficult financial position, If this is the case then you need to start finding ways to put some money away. Give yourself 3/4 months of sensible saving and focusing on your finances, because to quit your job, you will need a safety net to have incase something goes wrong.
Having the ability to say no - Becoming stricter with your finances will result in also needing to master the ability to say no. Say no to the parties, The casual drinks on the weekends, and any other events that may take time and money away from you. Changing your life will come at a cost.
Putting yourself first - Have some time to yourself, You will need a period of 3/4 months of putting your 'plan' into action. This means you will need to still get up and work as normal, but try and build some good habits and skills when outside of your job. I know it is very difficult and your schedule may be very busy. But the one thing you will need above everything is YOURSELF.
Why not?
Like i stated before, do not be silly and act irrationally as you may skip steps and not be fully equipped to take the step. But on the other hand, just know that with a few months of hard-work and discipline, and a plan set out, anyone can get to a point where they can change their careers and ultimately change their lives.
If you look at life in a far broader way and from a different perspective, why would you settle for a life where you allow something to make you feel rubbish on a day to day basis. Work is vital and is a part of mostly everyones life, but instead of working at the same job, on the same pay and for the same hours, Seek more and be disciplined with your time and finances to overcome being dependent on a pay-check.
How do i find a different job?
Write down every thing you love or enjoy and use this as the foundation of your plan. One of the biggest tips I can give you is to not instantly chase your passions. What I mean by this is that you may not start from a promising position however, with hard-work and discipline, your dreams and passions are very attainable. It all comes down to being realistic with your current financial, physical and mental position. Starting from nothing will be hard and seem impossible, but will be worth it, if you stick to it.
Apps and websites such as linked in, Indeed and other job sites will give you work within a given location. REMEMBER, you might need to find a job that may not excite you for a couple of months/years, but if you stay disciplined with a plan, You can use the tools you gain from these temporary jobs and put them into building something.
What if i want some time away from working?
Take it. But it again will come down to being calculated and knowing your own position in life. Don't completely destroy your life and take a risk that could hurt the people around you. Most people will have payments due because life is expensive, But your mental state is far more important. It may be a case of setting a time frame for 2/3 months and then taking some time to yourself.
